The general rule is Last On, First Off. Put pearls on only after applying hair spray, perfume, lotion, or make-up. These substances can damage the nacre and diminish the quality of pearls.

After each wear, wipe pearls with a soft cloth. If a strand of pearls gets soiled, wash and clean pearls in mild soapy water (not detergent). However, lay them flat while drying to avoid stretching and weakening of the silk thread. Chlorine and ammonia are other substances harmful to pearls. Therefore never wear pearls in the pool or in the shower, and avoid commercial jewelry cleaners for pearl jewelry.
Some suggest that safes are too dry an environment for storing pearls. It is best to store pearls where they can get the moisture that they need. If you need to keep in a safe, take them out regularly so they can rejuvenate moisture.

Pearl strands should be restrung every 6 months. Stringing with silk thread with a knot between the pearls is recommended. This not only prevents pearls from rubbing and damaging the nacre but also prevents losing pearls should the necklace break.
